Le Roi Soleil
A visit by Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble
Rameau – F. Couperin – Marais
Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble
The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble (DBE) will visit the Helsinki Early Music Festival to present a programme based on music around Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great or simply Le Roi Soleil. The Sun King surrounded himself with a variety of significant political, military and of course cultural figures. In this programme, the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble will present chamber music by some very well known, but also somewhat less known, composers of the time. On the programme you will find composers like Jean-Philippe Rameau, François Couperin, Philidor and Marin Marais in a combination of soloistic and ensemble music.
The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble was formed in 1971 and over the years has had an immense impact on the early music scene in Sweden. At the same time, it is one of the ensembles (if not the very ensemble) that has been active in this genre of music in Europe for the longest time. DBE celebrates its 50th anniversary this year by giving a number of concerts in Stockholm, and of course is very grateful for the opportunity to participate in this year’s Helsinki Early Music Festival. Although its members obviously have changed over time, the same spirit to explore new and hidden secrets and gems - some of which will be presented in the program at HEMF - is still very much alive.
