The Dancing Fiddle
Northwestern Finnish Folk violin tradition meets Baroque orchestral suites
Finnish Folk music, arr. Kentala Dance has unified music across all instruments, time periods, and genres, perhaps none more clearly than Baroque and folk music. The Finnish Baroque Orchestra (FiBO), led by violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala, brings the toe-tapping groove of fiddle music from Kaustinen, Finland (recently inscribed by UNESCO to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) to timeless suites by J.D. Heinichen and J.S. Bach. Using J.S. Bach’s orchestration in his D major Orchestral Suite, FiBO will also perform a brand-new suite arranged by Kentala, beginning with a Baroque-inspired overture and march, followed by traditional dance music from Kaustinen. Bring your dancing shoes as FiBO explores the crossover between traditional and Baroque music, where genre-lines are blurred and the irresistible rhythms of the past and present come alive. |
