BAROQUE FROM LATIN EUROPE
The rich musical traditions of Latin Europe come alive in this concert of vibrant Baroque masterpieces. From the grandeur of the French court to the sacred splendour of Iberian and Italian cathedrals, this programme offers a colourful journey through Southern Europe's Baroque heritage. The evening begins in France with Jean-Baptiste Lully's festive Plaude laetare Gallia and the exotic dances from Jean-Philippe Rameau's Les Indes galantes. Italian composer Isabella Leonarda, one of the most prolific female composers of the 17th century, brings both intimacy and grandeur with her Magnificat and Domine ad adiuvandum. After intermission, the focus shifts to the Iberian Peninsula with Diogo Dias Melgás’ moving Salve Regina and Francisco António de Almeida’s elegant motet O quam suavis. The concert culminates with the powerful Te Deum by Antonia Bembo, an extraordinary Italian composer who lived and worked in France. Performed by the Finnish Baroque Orchestra and the Helsinki Chamber Choir (conducted by Nils Schweckendiek), Baroque from Latin Europe highlights the rich diversity and emotional depth of Southern Europe's Baroque music – from the splendour of Versailles to the devotion of Iberian cloisters. |
