The long-standing collaboration between the Helsinki Chamber Choir (HKK) and FiBO continues, and this time the programme of the Lähelle (“Close to You”) tour, which visits five locations, features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s immortal Requiem. At least for the time being, this will be the final tour of the Lähelle project.

Conductor Nils Schweckendiek has chosen to perform the version of the work completed by Mozart scholar Robert Levin. Compared with the traditional version by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, Levin’s edition incorporates a number of revisions and improvements, including a substantial new Amen fugue based on sketches preserved in Mozart’s manuscript. The fugue is heard as the conclusion of the famous Lacrimosa.

The programme also includes music by Jan Dismas Zelenka, performed in collaboration with a local choir at each tour venue. A Czech-born contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, Zelenka spent much of his life working in Dresden. His Credo in D minor dates from 1740.

The programme is completed by Prayer by the Estonian master composer Arvo Pärt, offering a contemporary perspective on spirituality.

The tour is part of the Lähelle project, supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, which brings Baroque music to communities where it is rarely performed.

Duration: 1 h 30 min (incl. an intermission)

Ahead of the main tour, from 2 to 7 November, a chamber ensemble of the Helsinki Chamber Choir and FiBO will perform music by Bach, Mozart, Zelenka and Tůma. For detailed information on these free events, please visit FiBO’s audience engagement webpages (in Finnish).
