In the battle of love, the sweetest and most turbulent sounds are unleashed! The concert by the Finnish Baroque Orchestra (FiBO) and Danish bass-baritone Jakob Bloch Jespersen presents musical treasures from the 17th century. The programme also includes the world premiere of a work by Paola Livorsi.

In Claudio Monteverdi’s (1567–1643) virtuosic madrigal Io che nell’otio nacqui e d’otio vissi, the supremacy of love is depicted as a battle that awakens one from idleness. In Venice, Biagio Marini (1594–1663) worked under Monteverdi’s influence; his music expresses romantic disappointment in the form of a powerful instrumental fantasy based on song. The Cremonese composer Tarquinio Merula (1595–1665) likewise followed the Venetian style. Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583–1643), a master of keyboard music and organist at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, contributes a deeply emotional vocal work, Donna siam rei di morte, in which forbidden love is portrayed as the flames of hell.

From Andrea Falconieri (1585–1656), active in Naples and Spain, and the Warsaw-based Adam Jarzębski (d. 1649), the programme features vivid battle music. The world premiere by Paola Livorsi (b. 1967) is based on poems by Tarquinia Molza (1542–1617), a poet, scholar, and philosopher who was involved in the celebrated Concerto delle donne at the court of Ferrara.

The selection of 17th-century music is completed by works of Austrian violin virtuosos Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (c. 1620–1680) and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644–1704). Biber’s psalm Nisi Dominus for bass soloist, violinist, and continuo is a melancholic and delicate composition.
