Some of the greatest artists have always possessed the ability to entertain. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Divertimento for String Trio (K. 563) is a remarkable work. This 50-minute piece of entertainment is like a perfect pop song or a world-class musical production—nothing could be added or taken away.
Mozart dedicated the divertimento to his friend Puchberg, who later became the guardian of the composer’s children. However, the work was first performed in Dresden. Mozart himself played the viola in a trio that performed at the court of Frederick Augustus III of Saxony.
At the time, Mozart was offered a position as a court composer in Prussia, but he preferred to continue his life in Vienna. His livelihood as a musician was good; the loans he took were mainly to finance gambling and an active social life, which he enjoyed with his wife Constanze.
The string divertimento reflects a perfect command of the style of its time, an individuality approaching Romanticism, and historical and Baroque references such as the cantus firmus technique. Viennese dances also carry the listener along.
The leading Viennese publisher Artaria—which still exists today—published the first edition of the work a couple of months after Mozart’s death. In that edition, the piece was titled Gran Trio per Violino, Viola e Basso Composto dal Sig.r W. A. Mozart.
Duration: 1 h (no intermission)
