This spring, Cantores Minores unprecedentedly performs both of Johann Sebastian Bach’s great passions within nine days: St. Matthew’s Passion traditionally on Good Friday 29th March and St. John’s Passion as a 300th anniversary performance on Sunday 7th April, exactly 300 years after the premiere. As much as feasible, the performance will be like the historic performance on 7th April 1724 in St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, conducted by Bach himself and sang by the choristers of his St. Thomas School.
The passion will be performed – as is the custom in Leipzig every year – from the organ balcony, the choir is almost as small as in Bach’s times and the Finnish Baroque Orchestra will be supported by the big organ of the Helsinki Cathedral, exactly as the organ supported and still supports the orchestra in the performances in Leipzig. The audience has the opportunity to experience something of the feeling 300 years ago, albeit without the over one hour long sermon between the movements of the work. It’s a historic performance: we will have to wait 100 years for the next anniversary performance like this!
