Even though there are no audio recordings from the Baroque, we have a lot of information in the sheet music as well as other texts like textbooks, letters and even introductory texts in the sheet music. This kind of information give us a glimpse of the past. In the same way as stresses and articulation are of great importance in the French language and among the first things you learn in a language class, these texts speak a great deal about how French music should be played: how to deal with rhythms, how to play ornaments, technical instructions about playing the different instruments and so on. Even though these copious and precise instructions can feel restrictive, they are often followed (for instance in textbooks) by the clarification ”– – and all according to good taste”.
In the concert, a chamber ensemble from FiBO give a unique glance of this elegant and poignant music. The programme is performed on the most typical instruments of the French music: flute, violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord. All of the instruments get to display their own virtuoso take on the French music as well as show how the wonderful sounds merge into a beautiful whole. According to good taste, of course!
