Antonio Vivaldi’s (1678–1741) violin concerto cycle The Four Seasons consists of four musical poems. The sparkling brook of spring, the warmth of summer, the force of an autumn storm, and the harshness of winter come to life in the different movements, which rank among the most famous works of the Baroque era. Alongside The Four Seasons, the concert features Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Horns (RV 538), offering refined dialogue and the virtuosic brilliance characteristic of the period.
One of the evening’s soloists is Radek Baborák, one of the world’s most highly regarded horn players. He is known not only for the warm elegance of his tone but also for his precise and musical conducting style. Baborák has performed as a soloist with, among others, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, and has conducted orchestras around the world. The Czech musician currently serves as chief conductor of the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra and is active as a chamber musician with the Baborák Ensemble.
The programme also includes Giovanni Punto’s (1746–1803) Horn Concerto No. 5 in F major. Punto was a legendary horn virtuoso of his time and an innovator of the natural horn. His skill and inventiveness also inspired Beethoven, who composed a horn sonata for him.
