These summer festival concerts feature the delicate chamber music of Versailles, the dazzling colors of French opera, and a world premiere by Finnish-American composer Lara Poe. Baritone Aarne Pelkonen will perform as soloist in dramatic opera scenes by Lully and Rameau.
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632–1687) held an exclusive monopoly on court opera—an arrangement that only ended when he famously struck his own foot with his conducting staff. The concert dives into the world of Phaëton, a tragedy based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and also features Lully’s regal chamber music. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1684–1764), known by some as the "Newton of Music," brought new orchestral colors to the spectacular world of French opera.
François Couperin (1668–1733) became the most famous representative of his musical dynasty. From this keen observer of his world, we hear a suite evoking the landscapes of Piedmont in northwestern Italy. Lara Poe’s (b. 1993) world premiere responds to Couperin’s suite and draws further inspiration from the moods of the Finnish archipelago. Living in London, the composer encountered an ornate wrought iron gate in the Victoria and Albert Museum, cast in an elaborate rococo pattern. This gate merged in her imagination with the history of the ironworks in Kemiönsaari. The object influenced the unifying structural form of the work. Poe’s piece, heard at both festivals, is commissioned by the Kemiönsaari Music Festival to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Kemiönsaari this year.
