In this rare concert, the Finnish Natural Horn Ensemble will perform Martin-Joseph Mengal's Octet for Eight Natural Horns for the first time in Finland, using period instruments. Additionally, the concert will feature music for a natural horn ensemble from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Martin-Joseph Mengal (1784–1851) was a Belgian composer and teacher. He studied horn playing under Frédéric-Nicolas Duvernoy (1765–1838) at the Paris Conservatory. The concert includes a duo for two natural horns composed by Duvernoy, who was a solo horn player at the Paris Opera. Anton Joseph Reicha (1770–1836), a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory, played a key role in securing the Parisian premiere of Mengal's opera. Reicha had an extensive output of wind chamber music, and the concert will feature trios for three natural horns from his repertoire.
Another composer represented in the programme is Franz Stamitz, a lesser-known Bohemian composer. His fanfare-like piece Echo a 6 Corni di Caccia will open the concert.
