Fahmi Alqhai and Marianna Henriksson, programme planning

The gambist Fahmi Alqhai, together with the singer Alba Carmona and the Accademia del Piacere, brings FiBO along on a journey to the world of flamenco! The concert programme also contains 17th-century court music from Southern Europe.

Alqhai was born in Seville and his parents have roots in Syria and Palestine. The gambist performs as a soloist and has played with renowned ensembles, such as Jordi Savall’s orchestra Hespèrion XXI. Alqhai is the founder and leader of the Accademia del Piacere, which specialises in 17th-century music. In the imagination of this early music specialist from Andalusia, the charm of flamenco blends seamlessly with Baroque basso ostinato patterns. The concert programme features Alqhai’s arrangements of flamenco music, made especially for this joint project.

Antonio Bertali (1605–1669) was born in Verona and worked as court Kapellmeister in Vienna. His sonatas possess Mediterranean terpsichorean warmth and charming polyphony. The programme also contains lively violin duos by Maurizio Cazzati (1616–1678), who worked at the renowned courts of Mantua and Ferrara, as well as in Bologna.

Flamenco was recognised as a genre of Spanish Roma music at the end of the 18th century. Andrea Falconieri’s (1585–1656) Folia variations and Juan Arañés’ (d. 1649) Chacona a la vida bona offer a glimpse into the musical landscape of the courts on the Iberian peninsula. Arañés was the Kapellmeister of the Spanish embassy in Rome. In his work, the Neapolitan Falconieri employed a pattern that was known throughout Europe and associated with the Iberian peninsula.
