Queen Christina (1626–1689) is known in Swedish history as an unconventional ruler who was passionately committed to developing the cultural and scientific life of the young and emerging great power. Her court attracted some of the most renowned scholars and artists from across Europe, drawn by rumors of the queen who had been dubbed the "Minerva of the North".
In June 1654, Christina’s reign in Sweden came to a dramatic end in Uppsala. But what ultimately led the 27-year-old ruler to abdicate the throne?
The epoch evening delves into the turbulent 17th century, an era marked by great wars, harsh climatic conditions, and scientific breakthroughs. Through the music of the time, the concert brings to life Queen Christina’s own thoughts—and perhaps even offers a glimpse of the person behind the majestic splendor. The evening’s repertoire includes works by Vincenzo Albrici (1631–1690) and Antonio Bertali (1605–1669), preserved in Uppsala Library’s Düben Collection, as well as compositions for two violins and continuo by Antonio Cesti (1623–1669) and Alessandro Stradella (1639–1682), who composed music for Christina herself.
