Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio has become an inseparable part of the First Sunday of Advent. The oratorio’s first three cantatas beautifully recount the entire Christmas story. The Porvoo Concert Association presents this atmospheric oratorio for the fourth time, with performances in both Loviisa and Porvoo.
The first cantata of the Christmas Oratorio opens with the famous timpani strokes and joyful exclamations: Jauchzet, frohlocket! Auf, preiset die Tage (Rejoice, exult! Praise these days!). After the opening chorale, the Christmas story unfolds through the words of the Gospel of Luke: Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit… (In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered).
