Johann Sebastian Bach has unquestionably secured his place in the canon of music literature. Important church festivals are continually celebrated with his music, and music schools — up to the university level — require students to perform Bach’s works as a mandatory part of their degrees. Over time, Bach’s figure has taken on the aura of a kind of modern-day saint: a genius and virtuoso in our eyes, diligent and humble, embodying Christian virtues. No other composer has ever enjoyed such widespread reverence, and even today, Bach’s significance to music audiences remains profound.
Bach’s Christmas Oratorio has been part of the Cantores Minores choir’s repertoire for decades, and this is already the 10th time for the Finnish Baroque Orchestra. The boys’ choir is undoubtedly one of the most dedicated proponents of Bach’s music in the country, alongside baroque ensembles. A choir member’s voice part may change several times during their tenure, but because the singers have performed together since childhood, the ensemble achieves a unified, clear, and transparent sound. This type of tone is especially well suited to Bach’s polyphonic textures.
