About 20 years ago, a manuscript known today as Carlo G was found at a flea market near Vienna. The author of the manuscript, which contains 81 pieces of 17th-century Italian music, has remained a mystery, as the author's name is written in only one passage, which has since become obscured. Most of the songs in the collection have been titled for the enigmatic composer Carlo G, but there is also music by other contemporaries, including a previously unknown work by prominent composer Giulio Caccini.
It is very rare that Baroque music collections that were forgotten 400 years ago are still found today. Even rarer is a collection as significant as the Carlo G collection. What makes the script exceptional is that normally improvised virtuoso decorative patterns are written open in the notes, so it provides a lot of new insight into presentation practices. In addition, the collection mentions certain instruments such as the violin, chitarrone and Lira da gamba, which is also unusual for the time. The movements written for organ are also written open as an exception to the more typical basso continuo of the time.
The lyrics of the collection are all spiritual, suggesting that it was used by the nuns in a monastery. VocalEspoo's concert will feature the music of the Carlo G collection as the Finnish premiere.
The concert is organized in collaboration with FiBO and VocalEspoo.
