Franziska Fleischanderl and Irma Niskanen, programme planning

Franziska Fleischanderl is the most prominent soloist, researcher and ambassador of the salterio, a rare Baroque string instrument. The Austrian musician's journey with the salterio began in Venice, where she purchased the 18th-century instrument and transported it to the mainland and into the hearts of audiences by gondola.

Now, FiBO's concert will also take us to 18th-century Venice, led by Fleischanderl and artistic designer, violinist Irma Niskanen. The programme features a selection of the beloved music of Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) arranged for the enchantingly sounding salterio.

The salterio is an Italian Baroque version of the dulcimer string instrument, which can be played with small hammers, fingers, or a plectrum. It was used both as a solo instrument and in basso continuo. Florido Ubaldi, the most famous virtuoso of the instrument in the first half of the 18th century, performs a colorful symphony for salterio and continuo.

The programme also includes music for string ensemble. In addition to the Venetian favorite Tomaso Albinoni (1671–1751), the early and significant string quartet of Maddalena Laura Lombardini (1745–1818) will be heard. Lombardini, a composer, violinist and singer, was known as Madame Sirmen. She was born and died in Venice, but also made her career in London, Paris and at the court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg.

A video on FiBO’s Facebook page offers a taste of the salterio’s sound in Vivaldi’s Concerto (RV 220).

Duration: 1 h 45 min (incl. intermission)

FiBO's artistic designer Irma Niskanen will introduce the concert on February 14th from 5–5.30 pm.
